SOLARA | 2025 - 2026
The mission of SOLARA is to apply undergraduate engineering skills toward strengthening the resilience and visibility of R’Garden. SOLARA will do this by designing a semi-autonomous rover that collects environmental and soil data, providing valuable insight into how water, heat, and sunlight affect crop growth and sustainability. By delivering detailed information about soil moisture, temperature, sunlight intensity, and plant health, SOLARA will help optimize irrigation practices in an era of water scarcity. At the same time, the project will showcase how student-led engineering can support community farming, sustainability research, and climate adaptation. In doing so, SOLARA aims both to extend R’Garden’s practical impact and to reinforce its case for continued funding.
UPS System Modification | 2024 - 2025
The project involves createing a modification of a UPS system for the Lenovo Thinkserver with a competing zinc-manganese dioxide battery that uses potassium hydroxide as the electrolyte which would ensure the battery is non flammable. Research showed zinc-manganese dioxide battery can compete with a lithium-ion battery’s energy density and lifespan. Additionally, the process of lithium mining for batteries has negative effects on the planet including water depletion, contamination, habitat destruction, deforestation, and soil erosion. The modification of the UPS correlates with Lenovo’s dedication to sustainability and reducing its environmental impact.
TBD | 2023 - 2024
Pi Tech Design Alternatives | 2022 - 2023
The project required the team to research second sourced embedded computers for a viable alternative(s) to Raspberry Pi and then come up with a technical design of such alternative. With the current shortage in availability of Raspberry Pis, finding a suitable alternative will allow us to come up with a better cost efficient component with an extended life period. We conducted a paper study on the available alternatives, and then proceeded to develop a network of various physical devices that are able to collect, share, store, and visualize environmental sensor data from various types of locations.
